The neighborhood name Crown Heights has been subject to many interpretations regarding location and boundaries. Based on a survey conducted by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1978, the team delineated Crown Heights as being the section bound on the north by Atlantic Avenue, on the south by Empire Boulevard, on the southeast by East New York Avenue and on the west by Washington Avenue.
However, the area was divided into two districts, Crown Heights North, north of Eastern Parkway and Crown Heights South, to the south of Eastern Parkway.
The area of Crown Heights North which was studied by the Landmarks Preservation Commission for possible designation as a historic district is located, in general, between Pacific Street to the north, Eastern Parkway to the south, Albany Avenue to the east and Franklin Avenue to the west. The most significant concentration of architecturally distinguished buildings was found to be located in an oddly shaped area between Dean Street, Sterling Place, Rogers Avenue and Albany Avenue. However, bear in mind that these boundaries are proposed and must undergo further study and are subject to revision.
Historically this section of Brooklyn has undergone a number of names and in the 19th and early 20th centuries was known as St. Marks when St. Marks Avenue was lined with large single-family mansions. Bedford, Brower Park and Grant Square are other common names by which the community was called.
